C. Leonard O’Connell (Beta Kappa)

Charles Leonard O'Connell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 24, 1890. He graduated with the degree of Ph.G. from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh in 1912. He received the degree of A.B. from the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Pittsburgh in 1916, the degree of Pharm. n. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1929, and the degree of Pharm.AI. from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (honoris causae) in 1932. Dr. O'Connell started his apprenticeship in pharmacy in 1906 while still attending high school. He was a manufacturers' representative from 1916 to 1922 when he joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh as Instructor in Chemistry. He became an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in 1924, Professor of Pharmacy in 1926, Associate Dean in 1930, and Dean in 1932. He was a member of the Committee on Revision of the United States Pharmacopoeia, Chairman of the Board of Managers of the Allegheny County Juvenile Detention Home, President of the Allegheny County Civic Club, member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Pharmaceutical Association, the Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association (past-president), the Pennsylvania Academy of Science, the Federation International Pharmaceutique, the Catholic Club and the Faculty Club of the University of Pittsburgh. Dean O'Connell was co-author of a Manual on Pharmaceutical Law and a Manual on Pharmaceutical Technique. He was married and had four sons. He was elected Grand Regent in 1941. He was incapacitated by a serious illness a few months after he became Grand Regent and resigned in 1946.
