J. Dawson Reeder was born in Dorchester County, Maryland, the son of Charles M Reeder and Kalie Dawson Reeder. His father, Charles M. Reeder, founded Reeder's ship yards in Baltimore in 1813. Educated in the private and public schools of Baltimore, he attended Deichman's University School for 4 years and entered the University of Maryland in 1897 from which he graduated with a M.D. degree in 1901. After graduation, he was on the Teaching Staff, as follows: 1901 to 1904-Asst. Demonstrator of Embryology and Anatomy; 1905 to 1910- Lecturer on Osteology; and 1910 to 1921- Associate Professor of Proctology. In 1910, Dr. Reeder left general practice and confined himself to rectal surgery. 1909 found him in New York attending the New York Polyclinic and New York Post Graduate Medical Schools where he devoted his time to rectal diseases under the late Dr. James P. Tuttle and Dr. Saml. G. Gant. In 1910, Dr. Reeder married Miss Anne Cory Gourley of Southern Maryland, and they had two children. James Dawson Reeder, Jr., and Anne Ashcom Reeder. He was one of Delta's charter members and was also elected Secretary and Treasurer of the Chapter. In 1900, his senior year at the university, he was elected Regent of Delta Chapter and remained in the chair until his graduation in 1901. At the convention of the Grand Chapter held in Baltimore in 1901, Dr. Reeder was elected Grand Secretary and Treasurer and resigned the office in 1903 at the convention held in Washington, D. C. Past Grand Regent Reeder was a member of the Board of Incorporation of Kappa Psi which incorporated the Alpha Chapter in Wilmington, Delaware. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, Knights of Pythias, Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Md., Baltimore City Medical Society, Southern Med. Assn American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, and the United States Public Health Service.
