"Josh," as he was known by his Brothers and warm personal friends, was born at Mt. Washington, Maryland on April 28, 1882. He received his early education in the public schools of Baltimore City and at Marston's University School - a preparatory school for all colleges and universities. In 1899, he entered the University of Maryland from which he received his M.D. degree in May 1903. During his college career, he was Sergeant-at-Arms of his class and it was in 1901 that he was made a member of Kappa Psi, taking the oath under Norman Higgins then Regent of Delta Chapter. He served as Treasurer of his Chapter for the year 1902-03 and at the convention at Washington D. C, in 1903 he was elected Grand Vice Regent. While holding this office, he went abroad to study in the Liverpool hospitals. He was also a member of the Masons, Knights of Pythias, and Junior Order of the United American Mechanics.
