Convention Summary

The 34th Grand Council Convention of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity was held at the Hotel Muchlebach in Kansas City, Missouri on August 28 to 31, 1967, with Grand Regent Glen J. Sperandio presiding. There were 188 members and 16 guests registered for the four-day convention. Forty-eight of the 56 collegiate chapters were represented as were 19 graduate chapters and all 10 provinces.

Ilus W. Davis, mayor of Kansas City, welcomed the delegates and members at the opening session. Other speakers who addressed the assembly were Dean William Strickland of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, whose subject was "The Need for Professional Leadership," Dean Howard Mossberg of the University of Kansas, whose topic was "How a Pharmaceutical Fraternity Can Best Serve Its College," and Dr. Mickey C. Smith of the University of Mississippi, whose subject was "Communications: The Basis of Leadership." Panel discussions dealt with such topics as: making better professional practitioners, managing chapter financial and house operations, the storing of chapter records, improving communication with chapter alumni, and conducting successful campus and community service programs. A workshop on "Responsibilities of Chapter Officers" and a Memorial Service were conducted.

A special highlight of the convention was a report by Nicholas W. Fenney, Chairman of the Special Committee on History, on the completion of The History of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, edited by Dr. Frank H. Eby. First copies of the history were presented to Dr. Maynard W. Quimby of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, a 40-year member, and Mr. William S. Bucke, President of Lafayette Pharmacal Company, a 53-year member. James D. Sheahan accepted the third copy on behalf of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy.

Resolutions were adopted by the 34th Grand Council to urge the Executive Committee to adopt the Golden Bow Ritual into the Ritual of Kappa Psi and that it be used to open and close all subsequent sessions of the Grand Council and to instruct the Grand Ritualist to prepare an adaptation of the Golden Bow Ritual for use at province assemblies; to instruct the Grand Historian to design and distribute to the respective chapters a uniform "Chapter History Reporting Form" upon which historians can report major events in chapter history to the Grand Historian; and that a Chapter Evaluation Committee be appointed by the Grand Regent to formulate criteria for the purpose of recognizing outstanding and superior chapters,

The social program included two luncheons, at one of which Brother Richard Strommen, Executive Director of the Illinois Pharmaceutical Association, presented an address entitled: "Fraternities: Savior or Duds". Also, the members and guests attended the production "The Sound of Music" at an outdoor Starlight Theatre in addition to a sightseeing tour of Kansas City including a visitation through the Harry S. Truman Library. During the 88th Anniversary Dinner two Honorary Memberships were presented, one to Max W. Eggleston, President-elect of the American Pharmaceutical Association, and one to Robert G. Gibbs, Executive Secretary of the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association. Outgoing Grand Regent Sperandio was presented as engraved desk set and Sweetheart Pins were presented Mrs. Sperandio and Mrs. Walter R. Williams.
