Craig A. Johnston
Craig A. Johnston (Beta Pi)
Grand Regent: 2001-2003
Craig’s membership in Kappa Psi began in a less traditional route than most Brothers. Having earned his degree in Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was not initiated into the Fraternity as a collegiate member. Rather, he became an inspirational example of how a Brother initiated as a graduate can remain an active member of the Fraternity. His involvement on an international level began in 1995 when he was elected to the position of Grand Historian. He also served as Grand Counselor (1995-1997) and Grand Vice Regent (1997-1999) before being elected as Grand Regent in 2001.
Craig also served as Historian of the Montana Graduate Chapter, Grand Council Deputy of Gamma Eta, Supervisor of Province VII and chair of the National Publications Committee. He was the chairman for the 50th Grand Council Convention held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and served as the local chair for the 49th GCC, which was held in Kalispell, Montana, in 1999. In addition, Brother Johnston was chair of the History Committee, where he worked with the Grand Historian Emeritus Dr. Dewey Gamer, to design the "History of Kappa Psi" national slide show. He has also served as Grand Council Deputy of Beta Pi (1987-1990), Province X Satrap (1987-1995), Supervisor of Province IX, and Assistant Supervisor of Province V. He was the chair of the Registration Committee and Province X delegate to the 45th GCC for Kappa Psi. He was instrumental in rechartering Gamma Eta chapter (1991) and in the chartering of the Montana Graduate Chapter (1997). He also served as chairman of the National Scholarship Committee (1993-1997). Dr. Johnston was an active member of 14 professional societies, including AACP and Rho Chi (officer in several). He received the AACP Teacher of the Year award for the School of Pharmacy as well as Rho Chi Teacher of the Month several times. He was awarded the 1994 Mershon award as Montana Researcher of the Year by the Montana Academy of Sciences for which he has also served as president, vice president and recording secretary.
Dr. Johnston was a faculty member and Chair of the Pharmaceutical Science Department at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy. Prior to his 5 years in Arizona, he also worked as a faculty member for Washington State University and the University of Montana. Dr. Johnston spent much of his career advancing science in the fields of diabetes and fertility. He was especially known for his dedication to teaching and his encouragement of student leadership.
On April 11, 2011, Past Grand Regent Craig Alan Johnston passed away in Glendale, Arizona.
